Inconsistent Fognini Hunts for Success

It has been an up and down season for Fognini but at least it has been a lot better than how things had gone last year. Struggling to get himself a win in 2020, Fognini started this year with a couple at the ATP Cup, and then stormed into the fourth round at the Australian Open.

A couple of lacklustre results followed at the Miami Open and Marbella Open, the second of which came on clay but it looked like he had rediscovered his lost mojo when he stormed into the quarterfinal at Monte-Carlo Masters.

A loss to Casper Ruud in that round was then followed by another opening defeat in Barcelona. That he lost to the 133rd-ranked Bernabe Zapata Miralles, defaulted from the competition after being a set down having got bagelled in the first, underlines Fognini’s issues.

He starts off with another potentially straightforward encounter but can one trust his temperament to see him through here?

Taberner Looking to Gain Top-Level Experience

Spain’s Taberner is just six matches old at the highest level and looking to gain a lot more experience, having won just two of those matches.

This year, he is still hunting for his first main draw win at the highest level, but comes into the encounter on the back of a title win at the Antalya Challenger. He had beaten the highly-talented and fellow countryman Jaume Munar in that match.

Here in the qualifiers, Taberner came back from the dead in his opener against Jordan Thompson and then shocked Lorenzo Musetti in the second round to make it to the main draw.

Against a player ranked 28th, Taberner would have otherwise been a distant second favourite but given all the issues surrounding his opponent, the Spaniard could give himself a chance here.

Fognini v Taberner Prediction and Tip

At 8/13, Fognini is a good bet despite what transpired in Barcelona where the Italian player was sent packing by the officials. Backing Fognini to win this.
