Marcos Giron v Pablo Andujar Head to Head
The pair have never met before. This will be the first meeting between the 27-year old American, and the Spaniard, who is eight years older.

Giron Qualifies After Slice of Luck
Like most American players, Giron was brought up on hard courts, although way back in his junior days he did won one minor event on clay.
However, he finds himself in the first round of a clay Masters’ event for the first time in part due to a slice of fortune.
Forced to come through qualifying in Madrid, he won his first match against the Brazilian Thiago Monteiro on Saturday after a keenly fought three set battle.
He then faced Yoshida Nishikori of Japan for the right to play in the main event, and the match was balanced at one set all, when Nishikori was forced to retire with an injury.
Prior to that, Giron had not been in good form in 2021, and, since reaching the third round of the Murray River warm-up event in Melbourne, the only time he had gone beyond the first round in any tournament was in Miami. There he beat compatriot Tommy Paul before losing to Taylor Ritz.

Andujar, a Proven Clay Court Player
Andujar is a proven clay court player having competed in ten senior ATP finals on the surface, winning four of them. However, it has been three years since the last of his wins in Morocco, and his form and ranking have dipped since then.
He does have happy memories of Madrid though – he achieved his best ever result in a Masters’ tournament here in 2013 , when he reached the semi-final stage.
Like Giron he has struggled for form in 2021, although he did make the third round in Buenos Aires, and the second in Barcelona.
He, too, had to qualify this year, brushing aside the challenge of Mikhail Kukushkin of Kazakhstan, before being given a much stiffer test by Stefano Travaglia of Italy, the world number 67 on Sunday. The Italian took the first set only for Andujar to level, and then force the decisive break in the third to clinch the match.
Giron v Andujar Prediction and Tip
Andujar would appear to have the edge in this match, as he is an established clay court player on home soil. Giron had a stroke of luck to get this far, and may fortune to smile on him again if he is to progress.
