Daniil Medvedev v Cristian Garin Head to Head

There has been one previous match between these two players and Medvedev had won that at the 2019 Montreal Masters in straight sets. That, however, was played on hard court surfaces.

Medvedev Finally Wins on Clay

After eight successive defeats combined in Madrid, Rome and Paris, Medvedev finally managed to win a round on the clay court surface of one of those competitions.

And like one thought, his opponent Alejandro Davidovich Fokina did trouble Medvedev and won a set before the Russian registered his comeback-from-behind win.

In a match that last two hours and 13 minutes, Medvedev seemed to be headed in the same direction as he had previously on clay as lost the early break advantage he had in the first to lose the set.

Especially when the second set too seemed to be headed in the same direction after Medvedev broke first and then dropped his serve for the score to read 3-3. This time around, however, Medvedev broke right back to take a 4-3 lead, missed a set-point off his opponent’s next service game and then served it out to level the score.

And with his confidence now slowly built, he broke Fokina twice in two games, faced not a single break-point of his own before finishing it off 6-2 in the final set.

Medvedev’s starting goal for this season’s clay swing was to win one match at each of the three, Madrid Masters, Italian Open and French Open and he has begun well enough. Now to take a second step of doubling his count.

Garin Manages Another Third Round

For a player who has grown up to a steady diet of clay, and for someone who has won all of his five ATP titles on clay, Garin’s record in ATP 1000s and Grand Slam competitions on this surface is rather underwhelming.

The Chilean player has never gone beyond the third round at the Monte-Carlo Masters, Madrid Open, Italian Open or French Open, and even those third round appearance were restricted to two before this competition.

Which is why an easy second round victory over Dominik Koepfer should give Garin a lot of confidence to break that hoodoo, and proceed beyond. He defeated his German opponent 6-3, 6-4, needing an hour and 38 minutes to do so with that win following a 6-1, 6-4 rout of Fernando Verdasco in round one.

With Garin now facing an opponent with a record more appalling than his own at these big-ticket clay court tournaments, the Chilean will back himself to go one better than he has in his career.

Medvedev v Garin Prediction and Tip

It should come as no big surprise that Garin starts off as a favourite against a struggling Medvedev. Backing him to live up to that billing and making it through.
