Sinner Carries on from Barcelona Success
A Miami Masters finalist, all eyes were on Sinner to see how he goes on clay. And while he didn’t have the best of starts on the surface, losing in the second round of the Monte-Carlo Masters to Novak Djokovic, he bounced back well in Barcelona.
At that competition in Spain, Sinner overcame Roberto Bautista-Agut and Andrey Rublev in straight sets on his way to the semifinal where it was Stefanos Tsitsipas who stalled his run.
And starting out in the opener here against Guido Pella, Sinner got off to a flying start with back to back breaks in the sixth and eighth games of the first set. Sinner also broke Pella early in the second set but lost his own serve in the seventh against the run of play – it was the only break-point Sinner would face all match.
By that time Pella was beginning to struggle with his fitness and opted to retire from the match, giving Sinner his eighth successive occasion he has had a main draw win on clay. Can he continue with that same momentum against his qualifier opponenet?

Popyrin Takes Advantage of Struff Failing
Having made it to the main draw of this competition with qualifying wins earlier this week, Popyrin surprised Jan-Lennard Struff in his opening round win to seal his second round berth.
Popyrin needed an hour and a half to get past his German opponent in that opener, having started off a second favourite in her opener. The Aussie broke Struff twice to serve for the opening set at 5-1 and while he lost his serve once, Popyrin managed to serve out the first set.
In the second, Popyrin came back from a break down to level things out to 4-4 before saving three set-points on its way to a third set. The Aussie completed the victory 7-4 in the tie-breaker
Sinner v Popyrin Prediction and Tip
Sinner should have no major issues getting past his Aussie opponent and a straight-set result looks quite likely.
