Karolina Pliskova v Venus Williams Head to Head

There have been three previous matches played between these two players and Pliskova leads 2-1 on head to head. While Venus won their first meeting at the WTA Elite Trophy of 2015, beating her 7-5, 7-6 in the final, Pliskova came back to win the 2016 US Open and 2017 WTA Finals match.

Pliskova Desperate for Success

It’s not been the kind of start to the season as Pliskova would have liked. Things on court hadn’t quite been going her way last season either but a change in the coaching setup was expected to turn things around for the Czech.

Unfortunately for Pliskova, as things stand it has been an underwhelming season so far. A win-loss record of 10-8 for a top-10 player, who not so long ago was the top-ranked player in the world reeks of struggles.

And struggle it has been with just a third round appearance at the Australian Open to show for her efforts.

Pliskova’s switch to clay hasn’t been quite dazzling either. At Stuttgart, Pliskova required three sets to win both her first two rounds before falling to Ash Barty in the quarterfinals. And she followed that up with a shock second round defeat to Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in Madrid earlier this week.

The former world number one will hope she can slowly turn things around but for that she would need a deeper run into a competition. Can it be this time?

Venus Hasn’t Won Too Much in 2021

A second round appearance at the Yarra Valley Classic on the back of an open win against Arantxa Rus and another second round showing at the Australian Open after Venus defeated Kirsten Flipkens is all the success the American’s got this year.

Second round defeats at both those tournaments were followed by an opening loss to Zarina Diyas in Miami and then another straight-set loss at the hands of Jennifer Brady on the clay court of Madrid.

And these results, by themselves might not be that alarming but the 40-year-old had won just one of the nine matches she played last season too, giving her a 3-13 win-loss record since the start of 2020.

Playing against someone who hasn’t been in the best of her confidence should help but will it do enough to help Venus through this encounter?

Pliskova v Venus Prediction and Tip

It’s 1/6 for a Pliskova win while Venus starts at 4/1, such is the disparity between the two despite Pliskova’s indifferent form. Could look at the games handicap here.
