Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz sprung on the scene in 2019 and has maintained his consistency on the faster hard courts, after winning his maiden tournament at Winston Salem.
After a lull in the pandemic hit 2020, the Pole got off to a good start this season with a title in the season opener at Delracy Beach. While his swing Down Under and the hard court tournaments thereafter were underwhelming, he hit peak form at the Miami Masters defeating the likes of Stefanos Tsitsipas, Andrey Rublev and Denis Shapovalov to clinch his first ever Masters 1000 title.
Coming to the clay season confident with the Miami title, Hurkacz is yet to get his footing with early losses at Monte Carlo (to Dan Evans) and Madrid (to John Millman). With the French Open now a couple weeks away, the Pole will be looking for a better run here in Rome, which would give him the positive feel he needs heading into the second major of the year.

Musetti Returns to Rome, More Accomplished
It was at the 2020 Italian Open that teenager Lorenzo Musetti sprung on the scene with victories against former top five players in the world, Kei Nishikori and Stan Wawrinka.
The Italian continued his good run on the ATP Challenger Tour heading into the 2021 season. He continued his strong form at the Mexican Open this year with victories against Diego Schwartzman and Grigor Dimitrov before a semi-final loss to Stefanos Tsitsipas.
Comfortable on the clay, Musetti was expected to have a strong run on the slower dirt this season, but has yet to hit good form this swing. Early losses to Aslan Karatsev (Monte Carlo) and Felix Auger-Aliassime (Barcelona) were followed by him failing to qualify for the Madrid Masters 1000.
Musetti will be hoping that playing at home now in Italy will change his fortunes on the clay this season.

This has the making of a good opening round match. While Hurkacz is still looking to get his footing on clay after the Miami Open Masters title, Musetti returns to where he arrived on the scene last year, back home in Italy.
