Angelique Kerber v Alize Cornet Head to Head

There have been five matches between Kerber and Cornet on the WTA tour and Kerber leads 3-2. On clay, this record reads 2-0 in favour of Kerber, with her victories having come in 2013 in Madrid and 2015 in Rome.

Cornet has won both her matches in hard court tournaments.

Kerber 6-7 This Season

Since winning the 2018 Wimbledon, Kerber’s form has shown a drastic dip and in the two seasons since the start of 2020, she has won just 13 matches spread across a whopping 13 tournaments.

That’s correct, forgetting winning a title, Kerber’s best showing has been fourth round appearances at the Australian Open and US Open in 2020 and quarterfinal at the Grampians Trophy in Melbourne.

It’s been way worse on clay.

Kerber has won just two of her six matches on dirt, which came over the last two weeks or so. The German won her opener at the Stuttgart Open against the 216th-ranked Ekaterine Gorgodze and crushed the former French Open finalist Marketa Vondrousova in the opener in Madrid but second round losses in both those tournaments followed soon after.

Against a player herself searching for form, Kerber does have a decent chance of improving her showing on clay.

Qualifier Cornet Grappling with Early Losses

If she loses her first round match here in Rome, Cornet would have not won a main draw encounter in five tournaments. This also includes an opening round exit at the Saint-Malo ITF competition which came earlier this month as she desperately scrambled for form.

Which is probably why these qualifying wins in Rome, especially in the second round against Andrea Petkovic should do Cornet some good.

Because here is a player who had made it to the final of the Italian Open some years ago and while her form on clay dissipated after that, a victory over the off-colour Kerber would be both, unsurprising and a shot in the arm of the Frenchwoman.

Kerber v Cornet Prediction and Tip

While Cornet will look to take advantage of her opponent’s poor form, Kerber’s record on clay against the Frenchwoman should be good enough to help her go through in this one.
