Marketa Vondrousova v Ajla Tomljanovic Head to Head
There have been two previous matches played between these two players with both having won one apiece. The first came at the Istanbul Open in 2019 on clay where Vondrousova came away a straight-set winner before Tomljanovic carved out a three-set win in their second in 2020 in St. Petersburg.

A finalist at the 2019 French Open, Vondrousova returned in 2020 to finish with a 5-3 win-loss record on clay. This included a semifinal appearance at this very competition last season.
This year, however, Vondrousova hasn’t made the kind of start she would have liked. A first round win in Stuttgart kick-started her season on clay, but that was followed by a 6-1, 6-3 rout at the hands of Simona Halep.
And despite going into the Madrid Open as a 2/5 favourite to beat Angelique Kerber in the first round, Vondrousova was sent packing in that encounter as well.
She now returns to Rome in the hope she can get back to her winning ways, and pushes on deeper into the tournament in the lead-up to the big prize – the French Open.

Tomljanovic Needs Three-Setters to Qualify
Ranked 80th in the world, Tomljanovic’s best performance this season came on clay when she reached the third round in Charleston. That performance early last month saw the Aussie defeat Christina McHale and Marie Bouzkova before she fell to Sloane Stephens in the third.
In the follow-up to that, Tomljanovic also made the second round in the Charleston Open 2.0 that was played in the immediate follow-up of the first. And after that, she won a couple of qualifiers in Madrid before falling in the opening round of that competition to Elena Rybakina.
Late last week, Tomljanovic needed to go past a couple of qualifying round opponents, including Tereza Martincova and Laura Siegemund.
Tomljanovic’s best performance in Rome is a second round appearance in 2019 and a win here would emulate her showing. A vulnerable Vondrousova could be ripe for the taking.
