Petra Kvitova v Vera Zvonareva Head to Head

There have been six previous meetings between these two players before this but all of them came between 2009 and 2011. The overall record reads 3-3, while Kvitova has won both their matches on clay played in Rome and Madrid.

Kvitova Overcomes Slow Start in Opener

Kvitova was a whopping 1/12 to win her opener here against Magda Linette but fell to a shock loss of the first set. She then recovered to complete a three-set win and seal her round two berth at a tournament she has never progressed beyond the quarterfinal.

The world number 10, who had earlier reached the last eight at the Madrid Open last week, was on court for an hour and 38 minutes in a somewhat strange opening round win. She grabbed the match 1-6, 6-0, 6-2 to make it to the second round.

Linette broke Kvitova early and warded off three break-points to go 3-0 up and then repeated another break in the sixth game before sealing off the set. Almost as if it had shaken Kvitova out of a reverie, she reeled off nine games in a row to win the second and take a 3-0 lead in the decider.

And another break of serve as Linette served to stay in the match catapulted Kvitova into round two. Can she overcome her slow start as she takes on a player ranked outside the top 100 in round two?

Zvonareva Tames McHale

Facing fellow qualifier Christina McHale in her opening round match, Zvonareva routed the American 6-3, 6-0 to advance to the second round.

It was Zvonareva’s second main draw win on clay since her opening round victory at the Charleston Open in 2012 – yep, in nine years of tennis, the Russian has won just two matches on clay so far.

And she would be particularly pleased with the way she tamed McHale, needing just an hour and 25 minutes to get through. The match ceased to be a contest once McHale had retaliated with back to back breaks following her own loss of serves on two occasions as Zvonareva cruised through the next nine games in a row to clinch the cnounter.

Against Kvitova though, things would be a lot different for a player who has barely won anything on clay.

Kvitova v Zvonareva Prediction and Tip

A straight-set win for Kvitova looks the most likely result given the way both have gone in recent weeks.

Tip: Kvitova to win in straight sets: 5/6 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
