Elina Svitolina v Amanda Anisimova Head to Head

Both their previous two meetings came on hard court surfaces and it’s tied at 1-1. The first came at the Cincinnati Open of 2018 where Svitolina won in straight sets before Anisimova made it 1-1 in Doha last season.

Svitolina 2-2 on Clay after Miami Semis

A former junior French Open winner, Svitolina is a three-time quarterfinalist at the same competition at the senior level and more importantly won the title at Rome on two previous occasions. Clay clearly doesn’t pose too much of a problem for Svitolina as it does to some of the other top players like Naomi Osaka and a few others.

Which is why it was bit of a surprise to see Svitolina fall away in her opener at the Madrid Open – a tournament where she hasn’t had the best of times anyway – in three sets. Especially after she had won the opening set against Jil Teichmann.

Earlier, Svitolina had begun her clay swing in Stuttgart on the back of a semifinal showing in Miami, her career-best in that competition.

She defeated Angelique Kerber in the first and then went past Petra Kvitova in the second round before Ash Barty got the better of her. Can she shrug off a 2-2 clay win-loss record and travel the distance here?

Anisimova Pulls Past Wang

She was always a favourite going into her first round match here in Rome and Anisimova lived up to that billing by pocketing her opener against Wang Qiang in straight sets.

Anisimova won 7-5, 6-3 in an hour and 33 minutes to claim her second round spot against the world number six.

The two players exchanged breaks of serve in the fourth and fifth games of the first set, before Anisimova saved a break-point while serving at 4-4. The American then converted her second set-point off her opponent’s serve to take the lead.

In the second, Anisimova got the early break and then held on to her serve throughout the set, with neither player getting any chance to break the other.

Anisimova is in her fifth tournament of the season and has yet to go beyond winning one match in each of the tournaments. And playing Svitolina isn’t going to make that task any easier.

Svitolina v Anisimova Prediction and Tip

Svitolina is rightfully the favourite here at 4/7 but can Anisimova push the match into the third set? Quite possible if Anisimova can bring out her best tennis.
