Sofia Kenin v Barbora Krejcikova Head to Head

Kenin and Krejcikova have never faced off against each other in a competitive match at this level before this.

Kenin Returning after Three-Match Losing Streak

She has had a change of coach, with Kenin ‘sacking’ her father from that role. And it would be intriguing to see how her career goes from here on now that things will change with respect to that aspect of her game.

Because in recent times, a combination of form and fitness hadn’t combined too well for Kenin who entered this tournament on the back of a three-match losing streak. For a player who is ranked that high and is coming off a title win at the Australian Open and runnerup trophy last season, it has looked surprising.

Kenin did look to have started off well with a quarterfinal at the Yarra Valley Classic following a similar showing at the Abu Dhabi Open. Since then, however, things have gone pear-shaped for the previous season’s French Open.

The American has lost five of her previous six matches on the tour and three of those defeats have come in a row. Two of those three have come on clay where Kenin lost to Lauren Davis at Charleston and Anett Kontaveit in Stuttgart.

Can Kenin hope for a change in fortune with a change in her coaching setup?

Krejcikova Routs Saisai

Coming into this tournament on the back of successive defeats, with losses in Istanbul and Madrid coming in straight sets for Krejcikova, the Czech reduced Zheng Saisai to a virtual nobody in their opening round match in Rome.

Krejcikova came through 6-2, 6-0 in a little over an hour to seal her second round berth here, having never played in this competition before this.

Earlier, the Czech had turned a few heads with her showing at the WTA Dubai where the world number 40 had managed to make it to the final before going down to Garbine Muguruza. That aside, however, Krejcikova has won two in a row this season in only one competition and a win here will go a long way in helping reinject some confidence in her play.

Given Kenin’s lack of form, this could be a decent shot for Krejcikova.
