Martic Reaping Benefits from New Coach?

It’s been around a month since Martic brought in a new coach to her set-up, adding Italian Francesca Schiavone to her back-room staff and that seems to have provided some excellent benefits.

The Croat, who was on a five-match losing streak coming into this competition, seems to have turned things around rather nicely as these two successive wins indicate. And by winning her second round match against Kristina Mladenovic, Martic has made it through to her best showing in Rome, beating her previous best of a second round appearance over her last two appearances in this competition.

Martic, who had earlier needed three sets to get past Shelby Rogers in what was an upset win, had relatively lesser difficulty defeating Kristina Mladenovic in the second. She won 7-5, 6-3 to progress to the third round in an hour and 43 minutes.

She will hope to make it three wins in a row, having last managed that at the US Open last year.

Podoroska  Stuns Serena

Playing in just her first tournament on clay this year, Podoroska has managed something not too many can dream of all career. She defeated Serena Williams in straight sets, relegating the champion tennis player to only her second defeat of the season.

Surely enough, like we had said in our preview here, Serena was rusty and vulnerable throughout the match, and fell in nearly two hours and two sets to the Argentine.

Podoroska shared breaks of serves in successive games on two separate occasions, breaking and losing serve in the second-third games and then again in the ninth and 10th game. Even in the tie-breaker that followed, Serena refused to relent before Podoroska won it off her fourth set-point.

It looked like the Argentine had blown her chances away when she failed to serve out the match at 5-3 but at 5-6 down, Serena was broken to love for Podoroska to complete a shock win.

Martic v Podoroska Prediction and Tip

Not much to choose between these two but we will have to go with Podoroska given how well she has played all tournament and for the confidence from her win over Serena.
