Reilly Opelka v Federico Delbonis Head to Head

This will be the first ever meeting between Opelka and Delbonis.

Opelka Overturning a Poor Season Otherwise

A first round win at the Great Ocean Road Open and another opening round victory at the Australian Open is how Opelkar had kick-started his season but since those two wins, the American has endured some seriously bad form.

Coming into this tournament in Rome, Opelka had lost six matches on the bounce, all of which came against players ranked outside the top 10. And when he fell in straight sets to Alexei Popyrin and Dominik Koepfer in back to back matches before this it looked like Opelka was in for some more troubling times on clay.

As it has turned out, the American has found a way to overturn three opponents in a row to seal his quarterfinal berth. And that’s also after going into each of those three matches as a second-favourite.

He first started off with a won over Richard Gasqiet, defeated Lorenzo Musetti in the second before shocking Aslan Karatsev in their third round match. He defeated the Russian 7-6 (6), 6-4 to reach the last eight which is already way better than his best ever showing showing in Rome, having never before qualified for the tournament main draw.

Can he now overcome a lower-ranked qualifier, but a clay-court specialist?

Qualifier Delbonis in Serious Form

Delbonis is a clay court specialist but even he wouldn’t have been expecting the kind of returns he has already got from this tournament.

Having qualified for this event with wins over Marcos Giron and Frances Tiafoe, Delbonis has had to face three extremely difficult opponents in the first three rounds of this competition and come through with flying colours.

It started with a three set, comeback from behind win over Karen Khachanov in the first round before the Argentine crushed David Goffin 6-2, 6-1 in the next match.

And on Thursday, Delbonis didn’t care too much for Felix Auger-Aliassime’s reputation either as the Argentine got past him in straight sets.

Delbonis needed nearly two hours to complete the win with Auger-Aliassime overturning an early break to push the set into a tie-breaker where Delbonis raced to an early 6-1 lead before dropping two set-points. He won the set off his third.

And in the second, Delbonis broke twice to go 5-0 and while his Canadian opponent took one game off the second set, there was no looking back as Delbonis completed an easy win in the end.

For a player who hadn’t won a single round at this competition, he already looks like he has done enough. But can he now clinch a place in the semifinal too?
