Federer Makes Another Return

20-time Grand Slam Champion and Swiss maestro Roger Federer returns to the tour and to the clay courts at the Geneva Open.

The 2009 Roland Garros winner had two knee surgeries in 2020 and missed all of the pandemic-hit season after the Australian Open as a result. Turning 40 later this year, the cloud around how much more time Federer has on the circuit remains and pundits wonder whether this is the last we will see of him on the red dirt.

Federer made his return to the ATP tour earlier this year in March when he played the ATP 250 at Doha where he lost in the quarter-finals to eventual title winner Nikoloz Basilashvili.

The Swiss had won a hard fought three-setter against Briton number one Dan Evans just prior to that. Federer had mentioned that he felt he needed more time on the practice courts with his game and fitness thereafter.

The former world number one has mentioned how the focus for the season remains Wimbledon, Tokyo Olympics and the US Open among other tournaments and returns to the clay as a build up for the grass and all that comes thereafter. Federer is scheduled to play here at the ATP 250 in Geneva as well as at the French Open in Paris in two weeks ahead of the grass court season.

The top seed here this week is in the top half of the draw and after an opening round bye runs into this opponent here. Clay court specialists and rising Next Gen stars Cristian Garin and Casper Ruud remain in the same half of the draw as Federer.

Andujar Cruises Past Thompson

It took all of an hour and 26 minutes for Andujar to get past his opening round opponent Jordan Thompson and he sealed his berth in round two against Federer with that cruise.

Andujar won 6-0, 6-4, as he broke his Aussie opponent five times in the match while losing his own serve just once. Where he scored over his opponent was his first serve percentage which read 69% to Thompson’s 55% while he also won 70% of those points to his opponent’s 58.

The Spaniard broke his opponent thrice in the first set and while he himself faced a couple of break-points, he saved them both easily.

This was followed by Andujar running away to a 3-1 lead in the second set and while Thompson did break back to level things off at 3-3, it was as close as he would get to getting past the Spaniard.

Andujar broke again soon after and closed out the match on that.

This was only Andujar’s fifth main draw win for the season but now comes the big one – a tennis great on a comeback trail, but can the Spaniard get his game to a level where he can actually challenge his opponent’s weaknesses?

Federer v Andujar Prediction and Tip

Federer is a favourite but given this is his comeback and it’s on a surface which is traditionally not his strongest, Andujar might consider he has a chance. Can he take a set off his champion opponent?
