Petra Martic v Varvara Gracheva Head to Head

There have been two previous meetings between these two players and Martic has won both. Both those matches came after the pandemic break last season with Martic defeating Gracheva in the opening round of the WTA Prague and then again in round three of US Open, both in straight sets.

Martic Finally Gets a Move On

It was beginning to become a season to forget for Martic. Before coming into the Italian Open last week, the Croat had won just four of the 12 matches she had played this season and that included a quarterfinal appearance at the Phillip Island Trophy just after the Australian Open.

Her switch to clay hadn’t gone well either with opening round, straight-set losses at the Istanbul Open and Madrid Open and when the 17/10 outsider started her Italian Open campaign with a first set loss to Shelby Rogers, the writing seemed to be on the wall. Another loss looked to be in the offing.

Instead, Martic fought back with a three-set win over Rogers and all of a sudden it looked like a switch had been flicked.

She then overcame Kristina Mladenovic, edged out Nadia Podoroska and then defeated the in-form Jessica Pegula to march into the semifinal. And while she went down to Karolina Pliskova in that match, it wasn’t without a fight.

With some of her confidence bound to be back it would seem the new coach for clay, Francesca Schiavone is working some of her magic. Can she continue with the same here?

Gracheva Hasn’t Won a Match in a While

The world number 90 had a decent start to the season as she won opening round encounters at all the three competitions she played in Melbourne – Yarra Valley Classic, Australian Open and Phillip Island Trophy.

Since then, however, things haven’t gone her way and losses have come thick and fast. So much so, Gracheva is yet to win a main draw match at a WTA competition in this period since February 15.

There have been defeats in the opening round at Lyon, Guadalajara and Monterrey before she failed to make the main draw in Miami.

And a switch to clay hasn’t helped either, with Gracheva losing in the first round in Charleston and unable to get through the qualifiers at Stuttgart and Madrid. She opted to feature in an ITF competition after that, and made the semifinal there at Saint-Malo but can Gracheva ‘up the ante’ and win a match at a WTA competition?

Martic v Gracheva Prediction and Tip

Martic has been inconsistent in the past but her form in Rome and her opponent’s struggles overall make her a favourite to win in straight sets.
