Herbert Hoping for Better Run on Clay

While Herbert’s record on clay at the highest level isn’t too different from that on hard court surfaces, having won none of his Challenger titles on clay is a possible indicator of where his preferences lie.

This season, Herbert is 2-3 on clay in main draws but what that doesn’t say is he had also lost in the qualifying round of the Monte-Carlo Masters and to Bernard Tomic, a player in a horror run of his own.

On the other hand, Herbert did make it to his fourth final in an ATP competition, one at the Marseille Open where he lost to Daniil Medvedev.

With form not on his side, and an opponent as tricky as Korda up against him, the doubles specialist Herbert will be hoping for some sort of a lucky break to get moving.

Korda in Poor Clay Form

Having shot to fame after reaching the fourth round of the French Open last season after starting out as a qualifier, a lot was expected out of Korda this clay swing. Unfortunately for him, he hasn’t quite got going yet.

Starting out in Belgrade against Aljaz Bedene, Korda was 4/6 favourite to win his opener but was taken down in three sets in that first round match. This was followed by another opening defeat at Munich and for the second time it came against a player who was a distant second-favourite in that match.

What would have got his goat is his loss at the hands of Arthur Cazaux in the first qualifier of the Madrid Masters. Cazaux is ranked outside the top 500 and was 9/2 odds to upset Korda, and to have still won in straight sets was an indicator of how badly the American’s stocks had fallen.

What Korda will now hope for is to look back at that French Open showing from 2020 and the Miami Open performance earlier this year when he made it all the way through to the quarterfinal to get some confidence.

Can he pull past Herbert and register his maiden win on clay this season though?

Herbert v Korda Prediction and Tip

Korda’s recent record, his three-match losing streak notwithstanding makes him a slight favourite here at 4/5. Those are good odds too for a Korda win and we will have to go with them.
