Ugo Humbert v Yoshihito Nishioka Head to Head

Their only previous meeting came at the 2020 Delray Beach Open where Nishioka overcame a set deficit to bagel Humbert in the third set.

Humbert Struggling on Clay in 2021

Before the start of this year’s clay court swing, Humbert was 5-7 on dirt in his career as compared to 44-37 on other courts. And he has done nothing to dispel the notion it’s not his favourite surface this year.

At the Monte-Carlo Masters, which was Humbert’s first tournament on clay this year, he was taken to the cleaners by Aussie John Millman, who has not had the best record on clay himself. He lost in straight sets.

A first round win against Marco Cecchinato in Estoril raised some hopes but that was followed by three successive defeats on clay. And to rub further salts to the wounds, Humbert failed to win a single set in any of these four losses on this surface in 2021.

To be fair to Humbert, the draw hasn’t been too kind to him in the last two tournaments he’s played – facing Aslan Karatsev in the current form and Jannik Sinner at Madrid and Rome respectively cannot be an easy task for someone who isn’t a big fan of the surface.

Which is why, if Humbert can ignore what’s happened in the past and start this one afresh against a player ranked that low, he might have a chance to win one on clay.

Nishioka No Better on Clay

One of the reasons for my aforementioned line about Humbert’s chances stem from the fact Nishioka himself has been in strife on clay.

He has been 1-2 on this surface this season but that’s only main draw matches because twice in two tournaments, the Japanese player ended up losing in the qualifiers and making it to the main draw as a lucky loser.

And while Nishioka did get the better of Filip Krajinovic as his only win this year on dirt, his losses have been emphatic. Those two defeats have seen him win just five games spread across four sets.

Overall, Nishioka is 5-14 in his career on clay, which indicates this could be an intriguing battle between two reluctant clay-courters.

Humbert v Nishioka Prediction and Tip

Humbert starts off as a favourite despite his poor record on clay and that’s to do with his opponent’s even more abysmal stats on this surface. Expect a fighting encounter that goes to a third set.
