Garcia Starts Clay with 1-1 in Rome

The Frenchwoman Garcia did not have the greatest of starts at the Italian Open which was her first competition on clay for the season.

She took a while to get used to the conditions before overcoming Elisabetta Cocciaretto but faced by the in-form Veronika Kudermetova in the second round, Garcia fell to a 6-4, 6-4 defeat.

Her record earlier this season hadn’t been exemplary either. Some middling performances like a third round entry at the Gippsland Trophy in Melbourne and another such third round appearance in Dubai allowed Garcia some breathing space but an opening round loss at the Australian Open and a couple of other early defeats have pegged her down.

Garcia, who was once ranked fourth in the world, might have had her best days behind her, but she entered this season on the back of a fourth round appearance at the French Open last season. That had included wins over Anett Kontaveit and Elise Mertens.

She sure can deliver results on clay, now it’s about getting back into that mindset.

Clay’s the Way for Ormaechea

With a career-best of 59th at one point in her career, Ormaechea has fallen to 287th in the world and that has forced her to get back to the basics.

Basics which include featuring on the ITF circuit and playing as many competitions as possible on clay at the expense of other surfaces. Which is why Ormaechea has featured in only two hard court matches since the start of 2020 while appearing in 32 on clay across all circuits.

This season, for instance, she hadn’t played a single match on the WTA tour – not even in the qualifiers – before this competition in Parma.

And shifting gears on to this, Ormaechea needed back to back three-setters in the qualifiers to make the main draw. In the first, she was a favourite against Varvara Flink before needing to upset Stefanie Voegele in the second qualifier.

Can she now win her first main draw match on the WTA tour since July 2019?

Garcia v Ormaechea Prediction and Tip

This looks to be a straightforward win for Garcia with only her rustiness being a bit of an issue, having played just two matches on clay. A straight-set but a fighting win for Garcia in the offing.

Tip: Garcia to win AND Over 19.5 games in the match: 11/10 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
