Wang Qiang v Martina Di Giuseppe Head to Head

Qiang and Di Giuseppe have never faced off in a competitive match before this.

Qiang Stalls Three-Match Losing Streak

In what has been a completely forgettable season for Qiang, she managed to break a three-match losing streak by defeating Misaki Doi in the first round here in Parma.

The former world number 12 needed three sets and more than two and a half hours to break Doi’s resistance and register only her fifth win of the year. Qiang has lost 11 matches in the process.

The first set turned out to be a breeze for Qiang, who broke her opponent in the very first game and then doubled the advantage in the fifth. She had a set-point on Doi’s serve soon after and then saved two break-points before converting her fifth set-point to pocket the opening set.

Things could have ended quicker but for Wang Qiang giving away the advantage of an early break, as she fell 3-5 behind in the second. A keen tussle helped her save five set-points but Doi finally managed to level the terms with a break of serve in the 12th game.

That was about the resistance Doi managed as Qiang raced off with three breaks of serves in the final set to clinch a rare win for the season.

Can she now make it back to back victories for the first time this year?

Di Giuseppe Hastens Hibino’s Exit

Ranked outside the top 200, Di Giuseppe was a rank outsider at 5/2 to win her first round match against Japan’s Nao Hibino. That she clinched it in straight sets, albeit a fighting one, would have come as a surprise to a few who have followed her season.

Because before the start of this tournament, Di Giuseppe’s only match win of the year had come in the first round of an ITF competition on clay. And even that had followed a string of six losses and was followed by two more defeats.

For her to then come through the qualifiers and make the main draw was an achievement of sorts enough. And to then register a 7-5, 7-6 (5) win over the 84th-ranked Hibino would be highly confidence-inducing.

In a match lasting an hour and 55 minutes, there were nine breaks of serves in all with fine margins separating the two – in the first, it took Di Giuseppe just a solitary set-point to clinch it while in the second, she took the final two points from being 5-5 in the tie-breaker.

Can she now cause a second, bigger upset?

Qiang v Di Giuseppe Prediction and Tip
