Richard Gasquet v Grégoire Barrère Head to Head

No previous matches have played between the 52nd-ranked Gasquet and Barrere who is a world number 123.

Gasquet’s Played Just Seven Matches in 2021

Six tournaments and seven matches into the season, it does look like Gasquet will need to dig himself out a big hole this year. Because the wins have been few and far between for the Frenchman and with age and fitness not on his side either, the writing seems to be on the wall.

Of course, Gasquet is a 15-time ATP champion and has experience on his side. He would have faced many a situation like this and will hope he can come out of this situation unscathed too.

Because for now, a 3-4 win-loss record which doesn’t include two withdrawals from competitions – at Doha and at Estoril – does not make for a good reading.

Add that to the fact he has won just one match on clay over his past five and hasn’t proceeded past the second round on the same surface since 2018, things could get even more difficult for him here. That said, he is up against a player struggling for form as well.

Barrère’s Not Won Since US Open

It was at the 2020 US Open that Barrere won a main draw match, making it to the second round by overpowering Taro Daniel. Nearly eight months on, Barrere has added just one more to his kitty – it came at the Montpellier Open earlier this season.

In the interim period, the 123rd-ranked Barrere has lost in opening rounds at a few of the competitions – including the French Open last year and Marseille this year – and failed to qualify for some of the other competitions.

That’s forced Barrere to feature in Challenger competitions, and while he has a final appearance at the Lille Challenger, his other forays on that lower circuit have also not been the best.

Which is why, while Barrere will be going up against a player who hasn’t played a lot this season, his confidence could well be down in the dumps too.
