David Goffin v Aljaz Bedene Head to Head

They have never played each other at the highest level of tennis but long ago, in 2010 there was a Challenger qualifier they had been a part of and Bedene had won that match on clay in straight sets.

Goffin Makes Decent Clay Start

This is not to say Goffin isn’t quite fond of clay because his records suggest otherwise. A win-loss ratio of 0.61 on clay, at the moment, is exactly the same as that on hard courts, but having come into this season with a 0-2 record on clay last season, there might have been some self-doubts.

All of those would have vanished when he started off at the Monte-Carlo Masters where he first registered wins over Marin Cilic and Marco Cecchinato and then shocked Alexander Zverev in the third round. Eventually, Goffin was surprised by Dan Evans in the quarterfinal.

Back to back opening wins followed by defeats at Barcelona and Rome might have taken some sting out of that performance but as far as having gotten back his clay rhythm is concerned, Goffin should have no worries.

Incidentally Goffin had won his first ATP title since 2017 earlier this year, capturing the Montpellier Open. Can he push towards a second for the season?

Bedene Easily Tames Simon

Bedene had no major trouble in getting past Gilles Simon in their opening round match as he continued to exhibit some form for the season.

The Slovenian world number 55 has been steady with his results since the beginning of the previous season and a 6-2, 6-3 win over the 68th-ranked Gilles Simon here underlined that again.

The ease of that win which came in an hour and 13 minutes made for stunning viewing too. Bedene broke Simon twice in both sets, and what made it even more special was he missed just two of his six breaking opportunities and did not offer his opponent even one.

This result follows a quarterfinal appearance at Cagliari, second round exit at Belgrade and an opening loss as a qualifier to Jan-Lennard Struff in Rome.

Goffin v Bedene Prediction and Tip

While Goffin is a favourite, it will be difficult to discount Bedene who has managed to push some of his more difficult opponents in recent times. That said, still backing a straight-set win for Goffin but a chance of one of the sets getting stretched to the distance.
