Fognini Pelts Pella in Opener

Fognini played another 50-something-ranked player in the first round and had no difficulties in getting past him and sealing his berth in the round of 16.

The Italian registered a 6-2, 6-2 win over Guido Pella in just over an hour, as he eased his way forward. Having struggled through most part of the clay swing except at the Monte-Carlo Masters where Fognini had made the quarterfinals, he was coming off four defeats from five matches before this.

Which is why Fognini would have needed a performance like this.

One in which the Italian staved off both the break-points he faced with ease and broke his opponent all four times he got a chance to do so.

Earlier in the season, Fognini had also made it to the fourth round of the Australian Open but such performances have been few and far between for a player whose last title win was a Monte-Carlo Masters 1000 tournament – about two years ago.

Can he travel the distance in this one?

Djere Finally Breaks Shocking Run

A winner at the Rio Open of 2019 and Sardinia Open the following year, Djere looked like he was on the verge of adding a third ATP title of his career in Cagliari this season when he reached the final. And while he lost a fighting contest to Lorenzo Sonego, Djere looked settled in a bid to make some deep runs in the clay court Masters 1000 events to follow.

Things turned out to be shockingly bad for the Serb after that.

At Monte-Carlo he was ripped apart from Karen Khachanov in the first round. Gianluca Mager crushed him at his home competition opener in Belgrade.

And when he failed to even get through the qualifiers of the Madrid Masters, losing his opener to Juan Ignacio Londero, something didn’t seem right.

Another opening round loss followed soon after in Rome leaving a lot of question-marks around his form.

Which is why, a win in this tournament’s first round was much needed, despite the manner in which Djere had to struggle for it. The world number 54 needed three sets and nearly three hours to overcome Thiago Monteiro to break his five-match losing streak but the relief was palpable.

Can he take this win as an encouraging sign coming into this second round match against a player who has himself had some similar issues recently?

Fognini v Djere Prediction and Tip

It’s a battle between two, currently, unpredictable players. We could see a longish match as a result, and one that could tilt either way. Fognini, at 4/5 is a favourite and we will have to back him here.
