Shapovalov Rallies to Beat Cecchinato

Canada’s Denis Shapovalov bounced back after losing the first set to defeat Italy’s Marco Cecchinato in the Round of 16 of the Geneva Open on Thursday.

The 22-year-old left-hander, who won 86% first serve points, saved 4 of 5 break points and broke Cecchinato’s serve four times, won the match 6-7 (4-7), 7-5, 6-1 in two hours and 22 minutes.

The win improved Shapovalov to 12-10 this year, with his best performance coming in Dubai, where he won three in a row to reach the semifinal before bowing out to Lloyd Harris.

This is only the third time that the Canadian will be appearing in the quarterfinals this year. He had also made it to the last eight in Doha but fell to Taylor Fritz.

A two-time ATP finalist, Shapovalov won the title in Stockholm in 2019 and finished runner-up at the Paris Masters. He is 5-4 on clay court this year and 22-18 overall on the surface. Last week he reached the Round of 16 in Madrid before going down to Rafael Nadal in a three-set thriller.

Djere Sends Fognini Packing

World No. 54 Laslo Djere knocked out sixth seed Fabio Fognini on Thursday to reach his sixth quarterfinal of the year.

The 25-year-old Serb, who came into the tournament on the back of five consecutive defeats, notched his second win of the tournament when he beat the World No. 29, 6-3, 6-7 (2-7), 6-1 on Thursday. Djere was leading 2-0 in the third when play got suspended on Wednesday.

The win improved Djere to 11-11 in 2021. The two-time ATP winner reached his third tour final in Cagliari last month. However, a defeat to Lorenzo Sonego was followed by four successive defeats, which included first-round exits in Monte-Calo, Serbia and Rome and a loss in the first qualifying round in Madrid.

Djere ended the losing streak with a come-from-behind victory over Brazil’s Thiago Monteiro in Geneva on Tuesday. The Serbian won the first-round contest 6-7 (7-9), 6-3, 7-5.

Djere had also reached the quarterfinals in Buenos Aires and Santiago earlier this year, but couldn’t reach the semis in either of those clay court tournaments.

Denis Shapovalov v Laslo Djere Prediction and Tip

A clay-court specialist, Djere is more experienced on the surface than his higher-ranked opponent. However, beating Shapovalov will be a huge ask. Expect this to be a close quarterfinal.
