Sofia Kenin v Jelena Ostapenko Head to Head

Their only previous meeting came at the 2020 Fed Cup where Ostapenko had managed to get past Kenin in three sets.

Kenin Grappling for Form

Fitness has been an obvious concern but whichever way you look at it, Kenin’s performances this season have been a far cry from how things had gone last season.

An Australian Open winner and a French Open finalist last year, Kenin’s best showing in 2021 came in the first two tournaments she played – a quarterfinal at the Abu Dhabi Open and then another last eight appearance at the Yarra Valley Classic.

Since then, Kenin has won just two of her next eight matches. A surgery for an acute appendicitis which was diagnosed in Australia obviously hasn’t helped her cause but since her return to tennis, the American has won just one match – that came in Miami.

In fact, the world number five enters this tournament on the back of a four-match losing with three of those matches having come on clay. Losses to Lauren Davis, Barbora Krejcikova and Anett Kontaveit would hurt and Kenin has a lot to do to turn things around.

Ostapenko’s Had a Decent Season So Far

After a couple of quite underwhelming seasons for Ostapenko, it’s been a better start to 2021 for the Latvian already. Other than at the Australian Open where she lost in the first round, Ostapenko has won at least a match in each of the eight other tournaments she has played in and in some cases, even added more victories to her tally.

The Italian Open, for instance, was her best showing of the season.

In what was Ostapenko’s final appearance coming into this tournament, Ostapenko stunned Johanna Konta in the first round and then defeated Ajla Tomljanovic and Angelique Kerber in the next two rounds to make it to the last eight.

And while she lost to Karolina Pliskova in that quarterfinal, it wasn’t without a fight with Ostapenko pushing her opponent to a third set tie-breaker.

With the kind of form she has shown all season, it wouldn’t be beyond her to push last year’s runner-up to a third set at the very least.

Kenin v Ostapenko Prediction and Tip

Expect Ostapenko to put up a solid fight here, and clinch a set as well. Might see a three-setter in this one.
