Vondroušová in Clay Court Struggles

Vondrousova is a former French Open finalist, having gotten there in 2019 but hasn’t had the best of seasons on clay so far in 2021.

Having started out with a first round win over Marie Bouzkova at Stuttgart, Vondrousova has followed that up with three successive defeats. Simona Halep wasted no time on her in the second round at that very tournament before Angelique Kerber sent her packing in straight sets in Madrid.

And then at Rome, a 1/2 favourite Vondrousova fell 6-4, 6-2 to Ajla Tomljanovic, signalling some serious form issues for the Czech.

This does come as a bit of a surprise though given Vondrousova had made a decent beginning to the season. The former world number 14 kick-started things off in Australia with a semifinal at the Yarra Valley Classic, and then stormed into the fourth round at the year’s first Grand Slam in Melbourne.

A third round appearance in Miami consisted of wins over Wang Qiang and Belinda Bencic but the turnaround on clay could play on her mind as she takes on the veteran Estonian.

Kanepi in Equally Deep Strife

When Kanepi shocked the world with wins over Aryna Sabalenka, Daria Kasatkina and Ekaterina Alexandrova to reach the final of Gippsland Trophy in what was the first tournament she played this season, the future looked bright for this veteran.

Unfortunately for her, results have gradually tapered off since then and winning matches has become a strife. Especially on clay.

After starting off with a first round win in Istanbul against Zarina Diyas, Kanepi has lost three in three – a second round defeat to Veronika Kudermetova at that very tournament, a qualifier loss in Madrid and then a first round defeat in Parma against Cori Gauff.

So much like her opponent, Kanepi also enters this match with not a lot of confidence and that could make for an intriguing contest.

Vondroušová v Kanepi Prediction and Tip

On paper there isn’t much to choose between the two which also shows in their odds at the moment – Kanepi is 1/1 to Vondrousova’s 4/5. Giving Vondrousova a chance to win this given her past record on this surface. You could also look at a three-setter in this match.

Tip: Vondrousova to win: 4/5 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
