Martić 10-10 After Slow Start

Things weren’t going her way to begin with in 2021, but Martic looks to have come back reasonably well in recent times. The Croat was 4-8 on win-loss coming into the Italian Open but back to back solid performances in Rome and Parma have raised hopes of a solid showing at Roland-Garros.

At the Italian Open, Martic was able to carve out wins over Shelby Rogers, Kristina Mladenovic, Nadia Podoroska and Jessica Pegula, all of whom could have been called tricky opponents. She finally went down fighting in three sets to Karolina Pliskova.

This was followed by a quarterfinal appearance in Parma where Martic eased past Varvara Lepchenko and Ludmilla Samsonova but then fell to Wang Qiang despite being an overwhelming favourite.

A quarterfinalist in 2019 at Roland Garros, Martic will at least kick-start this year’s French Open with enough confidence under her belt but the big question is how far can she go this time.

Giorgi’s Lost Four in Last Five

Giorgi had ended the 2018 season ranked 26th in the world but over the last three years, her rankings have shown a steady decline to the extent she had tumbled out of the top 100 by 2020.

A third round at the Australian Open and a semifinal appearance at Palermo last season helped her stall that decline but come 2021, things looked to have gone back to those days of struggle.

Because the Italian player has won just five of her 11 matches this season, and only once has she won back to back encounters – that came on the indoor hard courts of the Lyon Open.

More recently on clay, Giorgi fell in the first round at the Italian Open and followed it up with a second round exit in Parma, where she lost to Cori Gauff.

With no real form or results to clutch on to, this could end up being a difficult one for Giorgi.

Martić v Giorgi Prediction and Tip

Martic is a favourite here and we back her to get past Giorgi. There could be some value in the Italian winning a set though, given she has put up a fight even in losses but a safer option is a Martic victory.
