Sakkari Hoping for Better Results from Clay

While Sakkari has an Italian Open semifinal and a Morocco Open titles under her belt, both of which are tournaments played on clay, her recent record on this surface has been slightly underwhelming.

Last season, which was curtailed by the pandemic saw Sakkari play four matches on this surface spread across two tournaments and win and lose two.

And then this year, Sakkari hasn’t had the best of results again, with a 4-3 win-loss record. At the Stuttgart Open, which was her first clay court competition of the season, Sakkari fell to Petra Kvitova in the second round, before overcoming an Amanda Anisimova bagel and a defeating Anett Kontaveit in the first rounds at Madrid.

There again, the Greek player lost in the third round before falling to Cori Gauff in a strange match that saw her bow out 6-1, 1-6, 6-1. At the same time Sakkari has been bagelled twice in the same tournament – in Madrid – indicating a sudden lack of focus.

Can she start off on a high against a qualifier?

Zavatska Yet to Break into Top 100

21-year-old Zavatska will be featuring in her third main draw match at a Grand Slam but even before this she has never won one. And up against a player of the pedigree of Sakkari that will be a difficult task again.

Speaking of main draw victories, however, and the lack of them haven’t been restricted to just the Grand Slams for Zavatska.

Because in the whole of this season and the previous one, curtailed alright, Zavatska hadn’t won a single match. A few defeats like at Parma or the Australian Open came in the qualifiers itself while at two of those tournaments, she fell in the first round itself.

The story was no different last season either with her last main draw win having come at the 2019 Houston Open. On clay one has to go even further back to find a Zavatska win.

Sakkari v Zavatska Prediction and Tip
