Nikoloz Basilashvili v Dusan Lajovic Head to Head

There have been four previous matches played between these two players with Basilashvili leading 3-1. Add a qualifying round they met in Beijing 2016, and that changes to 4-1 for Basilashvili. Lajovic’s only win came on the clay courts of Umag in 2018 but Basilashvili has also won a match on clay which came in 2016 in Kitzbuhel.

Inconsistent Basilashvili Difficult to Predict

That phrase, “not sure which side of the bed has he got out from” seems to be very applicable for Basilashvili this season. Because it has been a tale of two sides for him.

One, in which the Georgian player has lost to players he should have had no business losing. The other, he has won matches – and tournaments – when nobody expected him to close close.

Let’s look at the brilliance of Basilashvili first and there’s the title win in Doha where he cruised past Roger Federer, Taylor Fritz and Roberto Bautista Agut to lift the trophy on those hard courts. And a month and a half later, he was busy fighting his way through the clay courts of Munich to win another title there, at the expense of the favourite Casper Ruud whom he shut out in the semifinal.

Those two title victories gave Basilashvili a 10-0 win-loss record. In the remaining 13 tournaments, he has won a grand total of only four matches. 11 of them have ended in opening round defeats, three of which came in the lead-up to this French Open.

Lajovic in Form Strife of His Own

After winning his first round match at the Miami Open, Lajovic went on a six-match losing streak with five of those defeats coming on clay. And even that came on the back of successive defeats on dirt last season, making it seven losses in a row.

It was only in the second edition of the Belgrade Open this season that the home lad Lajovic finally arrested that slide. He won his opener against Ricardas Berankis and then made it two in two by beating Jeremy Chardy in the second round.

A surprise loss to Andrej Martin followed soon after but he will now enter this French Open with some hope, and a little more confidence than he did earlier this month.

Lajovic’s only ATP title also has come on clay, so it’s not like this is an alien surface to him. It’s about confidence at the moment and if he can take some of the momentum from Belgrade into his opener against an unpredictable Basilashvili, Lajovic could have bit of a chance.

Basilashvili v Lajovic Prediction and Tip

While Basilashvili is a favourite, his record this year makes it very difficult to pick him at 8/11; instead Lajovic at 11/10 sounds like a more tempting call.
