Can Bouzkova Bring Hard Court Form to Clay?
Marie Bouzkova produced decent results on hard courts this year, but has a disappointing 1-3 record on clay.
With clay not being her preferred surface, the 22-year-old right-hander is yet to win a match at Roland Garros, having lost her first round matches in her previous two appearances. Bouzkova was beaten by Bianca Andreescu in the first round in 2019, while Kaia Kanepi sent her packing in the opening round last year. Interestingly both those matches were three-set affairs with Bouzkova taking the first set but faltering in the next two.
The World No. 52, who broke into the top 100 two years ago, made a fascinating run to the semifinals of the Rogers Cup in 2019 before being edged out by Serena Williams in three.
Last year, Bouzkova reached her first WTA final in Monterrey by defeating Johanna Konta in the semis, but lost to Elina Svitolina in a three-set final.
This year, the Czech player has an 11-8 record and that includes a run to her second WTA final at the Phillip Island Trophy. Bouzkova clinched two close three-setters against Jil Teichmann in the quarterfinals and Bianca Andreescu in the semifinals to reach the title clash of the WTA 500 event, but was denied a first title by Daria Kasatkina, who sealed the title with a three-set win.
Bouzkova looked solid in Guadalajara as well, reaching the semis by winning her first three rounds, but couldn’t reach the final after suffering a loss to Sara Sorribes Tormo.
On clay, she won her first-round match against Timea Babos at the Volvo Car Open, but since then has lost three in a row, losing to Ajla Tomljanovic in the second round of the Charleston event, Marketa Vondrousova in the first round in Stuttgart and retired while trailing Petra Kvitova in the opening round in Madrid.

Siniakova Looking Solid on Clay
Facing Bouzkova in the first round will be fellow Czech Katerina Siniakova, whose best performance at a Grand Slam came at the French Open, when she reached the fourth round of the tournament in 2019.
The 25-year-old right-hander edged past Elena Rybakina in the first round and then battled past the 29th seed Maria Sakkari in three before causing the biggest upset of the tournament by knocking out the top seed Naomi Osaka in the third round. Siniakova, however, couldn’t reach a first major quarterfinal going down to Madison Keys in the Round of 16.
The Czech started of brilliantly last year as well, breezing past Lauren Davis and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the first two rounds but faltering against Kiki Bertens in the Round of 32.
A two-time Grand Slam doubles champion, Siniakova has featured in five WTA finals, winning the titles in Shenzhen and Bastad in 2017.
She comes to Roland Garros with a 6-8 record in main draws this year, but a solid 5-3 record on clay. The World No. 68 reached the quarterfinals in Istanbul last month and the semifinals in Parma earlier this month. Her run in Parma, included a Round of 16 win over top seed Serena Williams. Siniakova was eventually beaten by Cori Gauff in a three-set semifinal.
Marie Bouzkova v Katerina Siniakova Prediction and Tip
Bouzkova is the higher-ranked player and has a winning record in 2021, however, clay is not her preferred surface. Siniakova on the other hand is far more experienced than her opponent and has produced decent results on clay. Bouzkova is expected to give a tough fight but Siniakova is expected to go through.
