Kerber, Relying on her Experience
Former World No. 1 Angelique Kerber will be hoping for some reprieve in Paris, seeing that her season so far has been less than impressive.
That, however, is going to be a tough ask of the German, seeing that her win-loss tally stands at 8-8 and she hasn’t made it past the first round at the Roland Garros in four of her last five appearances. The exception to this was the 2018 edition where she reached the quarterfinal.
Kerber’s preparation for the French Open included participation in the Madrid Open, Porsche Tennis Grand Prix, and the Italian Open. Her best run among the three came in Italy where she reached the third round after beating Simona Halep.
The rest of her season has been more or less along the same lines. Except for a quarterfinal run in the Grampians Trophy, she has lost quite early in the rest of the tournaments.
Needless to say, the German has been battling with her form for quite some time and is in desperate need of redemption.

Kalinina, Looking Quite Good on Clay
Not many people would have heard of the Ukrainian Anhelina Kalinina but that may be about to change soon. The 24-year-old has won two, back to back ITF events on the tour in Zagreb and Oeiras.
In fact, with the exception of the Australian Open where she lost in the qualifiers, Kalinina has spent her time mainly on the ITF circuit to prepare and build her form. However, that lack of exposure to the WTA events may just prove to be her undoing.
Nonetheless, she started in the French Open as a qualifier and navigated all three of her qualifying matches without dropping a single set. This feat also marks the first time that Kalinina will be competing in the main draw at the Roland Garros.
Kerber v Kalinina Prediction and Tip
Kerber has incurred her fair share of upsets in the past, particularly at the hands of lower-ranked players. The fact that Kalinina is currently World No. 139 should not matter much here.
If anything, the Ukrainian will fancy her chances after a pretty good run of things on the ITF circuit.
All in all, expect a good game of tennis, one that will likely see many games.
