Siegemund Was a Quarter-Finalist Last Year

Having never previously been further than the second round before, Siegemund was one of the surprise packages of the French Open last year, reaching the quarter-finals before eventually losing to Petra Kvitova.

On the way she beat both Petra Martic and Paula Badosa, in what was by far her best performance at a Grand Slam in her career.

There is nothing in her recent results on clay this year to suggest she is capable of emulating that run.

She began the clay court season on home soil in Stuttgart, where she lost to Ashleigh Barty in the second round.

Siegemund then had to qualify for Madrid, which she did only to meet Iga Świątek in the second round.

Her most recent tournament was in Rome, where she went out at the first round stage, beaten by the Argentine Nadia Podoroska, in three sets.

Garcia is Former Roland Garros Doubles Champion

Garcia has a fine record at her home Grand Slam. She reached the quarter-finals back in 2017 in the singles, and has twice made the fourth round, including last year, where she defeated Elise Mertens, before eventually losing to Elina Svitolina.

And she has enjoyed even more success in the doubles – with long-time partner Kristina Mladenovic they won the event in 2016.

Like Siegemund her form on clay in 2021 has been modest, she got reached the second round in Rome, and thsn went one better in Parma, before losing to the Czech world 68 Katerina Siniakova.

Earlier this week she played in Strasbourg, where she reached the second round, only to lose to another Czech player, Barbora Krejcikova, beaten in three sets.

This is a match between two former quarter-finalists in the tournament, neither of who are likely get that far this time based on current form.

There is little to choose between them but, because Garcia is playing in home conditions, that may give her the slight edge.
