Cristian Garin v Mackenzie McDonald Head to Head

Garin and McDonald have never faced off against each other in a competitive encounter.

Garin Overcomes One Set Deficit

It wasn’t the easiest of wins and at one stage it looked like Juan Ignacio Londero could even pouch a second set before Garin came back strongly to register a four-set win in his opener.

The Chilean, who has won five clay titles in his career, won 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (6), 6-2 in three hours and 12 minutes to proceed to the second round.

After losing the early advantage of a break in the first set and getting his own serve broken twice, Garin reversed that in the second set by falling a break behind and then breaking his opponent two times to make it a set apiece.

Londero then raced off to a 4-0 lead in the third set but once Garin got bit of a rhythm, he broke back to force a tie-breaker which he won off his fourth set-point. With Londero’s hold shattered, Garin had no difficulty in closing out the match in four.

Another win here takes Garin to a career-best third round at French Open, something he had managed last year. For a player bred on clay courts, he would like to do a lot better than that though.

McDonald Also in a Comeback Win

Much like Garin, McDonald was also involved in a four-set win and one in which he needed to come back from a set down against Emil Ruusuvuori.

The American qualifier, who was an overwhelming favourite going into the encounter thanks to his opponent’s shoddy form, won 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (4), 6-3 to make it to the second round.

The 118th-ranked McDonald had earlier won all his three qualifying rounds in straight sets to make it to the main draw, but fell behind in a strange first set that was full of break-points – 13 of them came off McDonald’s serve and two off Ruusuvuori.

Down a set, McDonald then broke his opponent twice to win the second, but when he lost his serve at 5-5 in the third, signs looked ominous. Instead, he broke back to force a tie-breaker which he then won easily.

And with his confidence back, McDonald closed out the fourth set with three breaks of serves.

Things will get rather difficult now.

Garin v McDonald Prediction and Tip

Garin is an overwhelming favourite for this one with odds of 3/10 for his win. And given his form on clay, those are safe odds to go with. We believe should make a stronger start too and win the first set.
