Inconsistent Vondrousova in Topsy-Turvy Win

It wasn’t the prettiest tennis on show but Vondrousova would be plain relieved to have come through from her opening round match against Kaia Kanepi.

In a match lasting an hour and 33 minutes, the 2019 runnerup here registered a 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 win and proceeded to round two, going one better than what she had done last season.

Up two breaks in the first set, Vondrousova suddenly lost control and was broken back three times to lose the set. It was a stunning collapse but credit where it’s due as Vondrousova first firmed up her serving in the second set and then broke Kanepi twice to clinch the equaliser.

And then in the third, Vondrousova grabbed full control, running through her opponent easily and facing no break-points.

This win stalled a three-match losing streak on clay for the Czech and she will now hope to make it two in two against an opponent who has a career-best ranking of 148th in the world.

Tan Shock for Cornet

In Tan’s first WTA competition of the season, she had lost in the first round – it had come in Lyon in March. She next played on clay in Bogota and lo and behold. As a qualifier the Frenchwoman cruised into the semifinal there to inject herself with surprising confidence.

That seemed to have helped her no ends when she took to court in her opening round match against fellow French player Alize Cornet as she breezed away to a straight-set win.

Tan was on the court for an hour and 36 minutes before registering a 6-4, 6-4 victory, a first ever in the main draw of a Grand Slam.

In a match full of breaks of serves, Tan was broken five times but retaliated with seven of her own. And in both sets, both players had enough chances to grab the match by its horns but in the end it was Tan who managed to do that.

Can she now continue with that form against a player who can be a little erratic if her recent form is anything to go by?

Vondrousova v Tan Prediction and Tip

This should be a cakewalk for Vondrousova but given how she has had her difficulties in closing out matches, we would refrain from calling it a straight set win. Could see more than 8.5 games in the first set with multiple breaks of serves.

Tip: Over 8.5 games in the first set: 1/2 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
