Sofia Kenin v Hailey Baptiste Head to Head

No previous matches have been played between Kenin and the 203rd-ranked Baptiste.

Kenin Breaks Her Clay Duck

She was on a four-match losing streak coming into this competition which included three losses in a row on clay. Which is why Kenin was the second favourite going into this opener against Jelena Ostapenko but still managed to carve out an opening round win.

Having finished runnerup in the previous edition of the competition, Kenin would have liked to make a better start on dirt but fitness issues did make things difficult. Which is also why a hard-fought three-set win over Ostapenko should go a long way in helping Kenin regain some of her lost morale.

Kenin needed two hours and seven minutes to carve out a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 victory in an encounter that had a whopping 16 breaks of serves! Even more stunning was the fact Kenin got herself 10 break-points and broke her opponent a whopping nine times.

Both players struggled with their winners and unforced errors but while Kenin was a minus nine on that, Ostapenko hit 32 winners and 48 unforced errors, allowing the American an advantage.

With Kenin now facing a qualifier in round two, things could get easier for her.

Baptiste Wins Maiden Main Draw Match at Majors

Having played just one previous match in the main draw of a major competition, Baptiste went on to rout Anna Blinkova in her opener here to make it to round two.

Following three wins in the qualifiers, Baptiste spent just an hour and 12 minutes on court to send Blinkova packing 6-1, 6-4 and seal a second round berth against a fellow American.

Baptiste was off to a flying start as she broke  her opponent two times to go 5-0 up before Blinkova even got on the board. In the second set, she got another early break and things looked to be headed to plan when Blinkova broke back in the eighth game.

Undeterred, Baptiste broke to love and then held to the same score to win the match.

Having won just one main draw match on clay this season Baptiste will at least have some taste of success coming into this second round. Can she usurp a top-10 player this early in her career?

Kenin v Baptiste Prediction and Tip

Kenin is 2/5 to win this which is surprisingly long odds for someone ranked 200 places above her opponent. Happy to go with that here.
