Jessica Pegula v Tereza Martincova Head to Head

Their only previous meeting came at the 2016 Quebec Open where Martincova defeated Pegula in straight sets to enter the semifinal.

No. 28 seed Jessica Pegula of America won her first main draw match at Roland Garros as she edged past China’s Zhu Lin 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 in the opening round on Monday.

Having made first-round exits in 2019 and 2020, the 27-year-old finally won her first match at the Paris major, striking 35 winners in the contest that lasted two hours and 22 minutes.

Pegula converted 6 of 12 break points in the match and saved 11 of 16 that she faced. She, however, made 49 unforced errors in the match compared to Zhu’s 40.

The 2019 Washington champion has had a solid 2021. She reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open, her first at a major, by knocking out the fifth seed Elina Svitolina in the Round of 16 but was stopped by Jennifer Brady from progressing further.

Pegula next went on to reach the semifinals of the Qatar Open, defeating second seed Karolina Pliskova in the quarterfinals before falling to Petra Kvitova. She carried the Doha form to Dubai, defeating Pliskova once again to reach the quarterfinals, but her run was halted by Elise Mertens.

The American also reached the third round of the Miami Open and the quarterfinals in Rome, which included a second round win over Naomi Osaka.

Martincova Wins on Main Draw Debut

Facing Pegula in the first round will be Czech Republic’s Tereza Martincova, who won on her main draw debut at Roland Garros on Monday.

Martincova needed an hour an 58 minutes to dispatch Serbia’s Ivana Jorovic 6-3, 7-6 (8-6).

Ranked 94th in the world, the Czech player had 14 break point chances in the match and she converted four of them. She also faced six break points, saving 50% of those. Winning 49% of receiving points, Martincova won a total of 100 points.

The win also ended a streak of four main draw defeats for Martincova, and five including the qualifying rounds. She had last won a match against Leonie Kung in the first round in Bogota.

Prior to that she had good runs in Lyon and Dubai reaching the Round of 16 as a qualifier in both the events. She also reached the second rounds in St Petersburg and Miami.

Pegula v Martincova Prediction and Tip

Form definitely favours Pegula. She has had big wins in big tournaments this year and should move into the next round but could be stretched a tad.
