Marta Kostyuk v Zheng Saisai Head to Head

The only previous outing between Kostyuk and Saisai came at the 2019 Strasbourg Open. Kostyuk won that encounter on clay in straight sets to move into the quarterfinal.

Kostyuk Stuns Muguruza in Opener

Garbine Muguruza is a former French Open winner, and was in some brilliant form this season before an injury caused her to stumble a bit. Not a lot though because she was still being tipped as one of the top five or six favourites; so much so she said in an interview to WTA she doesn’t count herself as a favourite and would like to slowly get into rhythm.

Kostyuk had other ideas though. In a blazing performance on Monday, the Ukrainian world number 81 stormed past Muguruza in straight sets to set up her first ever win at Roland Garros.

She 6-1, 6-4 in an hour and 23 minutes, with Muguruza rarely able to challenge her opponent.

In fact even when the Spaniard managed to carve out a 3-1 lead in the second set after getting an early break, Kostyuk’s tenacity shone through as she broke Muguruza two times in a row and soon after served out the match.

Kostyuk now has a chance to emulate her career-best Grand Slam showing – she has a third round appearance at both, Australian Open and US Open – and will need to contend with struggling but suddenly confident Zheng Saisai…

Saisai Wins Despite 4/1 Odds

The extent of Zheng’s loss of form can be seen from the fact that despite being a top-60 player taking on the 49th-ranked Sara Sorribes Tormo, she was a whopping 4/1 to win the match.

And when Zheng fell a set behind her Spanish opponent, those odds lengthened even further.

Which is why her win over Sorribes Tormo can easily be the textbook definition of odds-defying, with Zheng coming back from a set down to register a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 win in two hours and 41 minutes.

This was just Zheng’s sixth win of the season in what is her 12th tournament, but having started off the year with six successive defeats, the tide seems to be changing for the Chinese player.

Kostyuk v Saisai Prediction and Tip

Kostyuk should be a favourite here, on a high from her Muguruza win and from the confidence from having had a decent season overall. Expect a fight but for Kostyuk to triumph.
