Ons Jabeur v Astra Sharma Head to Head

Their only previous match came at the Charleston Open recently, and Sharma had won that in three sets. It was the final of that competition and the result meant it was Sharma’s first ever singles WTA title win.

Jabeur Shuts Out Putintseva

There was no faulting Jabeur form-wise coming into this competition. And she lived up to resultant favourites tag in her opener with a straight-set win over a tricky opponent in the form of Yulia Putintseva.

In a match that lasted an hour and 21 minutes, Jabeur shut down Putintseva 7-5, 6-2 to seal her second round berth.

Putintseva did put up bit of a fight in the first set though, with the two players exchanging breaks in the fourth and fifth game, and then again in the four games which followed from the seventh game onward.

In fact Putintseva had a chance to serve for the set at 5-4 but Jabeur broke back and then again in the next game to clinch the set.

The second set was an easier affair for Jabeur who closed out the match with her third break for the set.

Jabeur now has a chance to avenge her recent defeat to a player who denied her a maiden WTA title.

Sharma Overturns Favourite Bara

It was bit of a surprise to see Sharma wasn’t starting out as a favourite in her first round match against Irina Bara. While Sharma had been out action for over a month, her last appearance on the WTA tour had come at the aforementioned Charleston Open where she had won five matches in a row to lift the trophy.

And that’s exactly how things turned out, with Sharma sealing off a straight-set win over Bara to move into the second round for the second year in a row. Incidentally Sharma has never reached the third at any major and will hope she can put up a repeat showing from last month to help herself to a career-best.

Because she did look like a part, like someone who has improved her singles play and coming through in less than an hour and a half to claim the win 7-6 (5), 6-2.

A late break in the first could have won Sharma the set slightly earlier but Bara broke back to level it at 6-6 before the Aussie claimed the tie-breaker. And in the second, Sharma broke Bara twice to come through.

Jabeur v Sharma Prediction and Tip

The pressure of the final might have got to Jabeur the last time these two met because she starts out as an overwhelming favourite here once again. Backing her for the win but not very sure of how easily could she get there.
