Garin Survives Close Shave and Saves Match Point

Garin has made the third round in Paris for the second successive year, but he has been to work extremely hard to still be in the tournament at this stage.

He had to come from a set down to beat the Argentine Juan Ignacio Londero on Sunday, but that was nothing compared to the challenge thrown down to him by the American qualifier, Mackenzie McDonald, on Wednesday night.

The first set was largely dominated by serve – there was just one break and that went against Garin.

The pair swapped service breaks early in the second set, but Garin was the man under pressure, and it was no surprise when he was broken again.

McDonald, with a two set lead, was totally in control at that stage.

And, when Garin was broken again at the start of the third set, he must have feared the worst.

However, he hung in there, saved two more break points and got his reward when he was able to break back. It went to a tie-break, Giron had two match points, but Garin saved both of them, and finally took his chance to pull a set back.

Seizing the initiative, Garin broke McDonald at the start of the fourth set, consolidating that with a further break as the match went into a fifth and deciding set.

The tension mounted as it went with serve, and it became a question of who would blink first. Garin was the first to earn break points, but this time it was McDonald’s turn to save them.

Then Garin had a match point, but yet again was thwarted by the American.

With the score six all on the Garin serve, McDonald then had two break points but Garin found all his nerve and energy to save them.

And serving to stay in the match for a third time, it proved too much for the American and he was finally beaten after four hours and twenty minutes on court.

Giron Making Third Round Debut

Giron is making his third round debut, not only in Paris, never having reached this stage in a Grand Slam before.

He had a stroke of fortune in his first round match. He was actually losing to the world Grigor Dimitrov, the world number 17) albeit a break up in the fourth set, when the Bulgarian was forced to retire with injury.

However. he capitalised on his luck by beating the Argentine clay court specialist Guido Pella in four sets on Wednesday/

The first set was tight, with Giron was the first to drop his serve. Pella had two set points, one on his own service, but could take either of them, and it went to a tie-break. Giron was perfect on serve, Pella was not, and the American took the lead.

The American soon found himself two breaks up in the second set, Pella pulled one of them back but two more dropped serves gave Giron a two set lead.

The third set began with two dropped service games. Giron had four break points to take what would have been almost certainly a decisive lead, missed all of them, and it went to another tie-break, which this time Pella won.

However. all hopes of an Argentine comeback were ended by a double break in the fourth set. Pella claimed one of them back but it was not enough, and Giron was able to serve out for the match.

Garin v Giron Prediction and Tip

Provided that Garin has not taken too much out of himself in his two matches so far, he will begin as favourite against the American, who will be playing in the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time.
