Muchova Into Maiden Third Round at RG
2021 Australian Open semifinalist Karolina Muchova moved into the third round of the French Open for the first time in her third appearance as she eliminated America’s Varvara Lepchenko in straight sets in the second round on Thursday.
Saving all six of the break points she faced in the match, the 18th seed Muchova won the one-hour-and-40-minute contest 6-3, 6-4. The 24-year-old Czech player struck 26 winners, made 19 unforced errors and converted 3 of 9 break points to beat the World no. 171.
The win improved Muchova to 13-3 this year. She had beaten Germany’s Andrea Petkovic in the first round despite being outplayed in the first set. Muchova won Tuesday’s two-hour-and-10-minute contest 1-6, 6-3, 6-4.
It has been a good year for the Czech, who was eliminated in the second round at the French Open on her main draw debut in 2019 and the first round last year.
This year, she reached the semifinals of the Australian Open by knocking out World No. 1 Ash Barty in the quarterfinals, but couldn’t reach a first major final after losing to Jennifer Brady.
Muchova, who won her only WTA title in Seoul in 2019, had also reached the last eight at the Madrid Open last month, defeating Naomi Osaka in the second round of that competition.

Stephens Sends Pliskova Packing
2017 U.S. Open champion Sloane Stephens is looking dangerous once again as the American advanced to the third round at Roland Garros with a 7-5, 6-1 win over ninth seed Karolina Pliskova on Thursday.
Stephens, who was 4-11 in 2020 and had a 0-4 start this year, finally seems to have regained her touch. The 2018 French Open finalist, who reached the quarterfinals in Charleston and the semifinals in Parma ahead of the Roland Garros event, began the tournament with a three-set win over the determined Carla Suarez Navarro, who returned to court after winning her battle against cancer to play at the French Open one last time before her retirement.
Stephens rallied against Suarez Navarro to win the first round 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 in two hours and 24 minutes.
The 28-year-old former World No. 3 needed just an hour and 31 minutes to defeat Pliskova on Thursday. Landing 74% first serves, Stephens hit 22 winners and made 17 unforced errors compared to the Czech’s 17 winners and 38 unforced errors. Overall, the American broke her opponent six times in the match and saved five of seven break points.
A winner of six career titles, Stephens is playing in her 10th French Open, and has reached fourth round or better on six of the previous nine appearances. Stephens lost to Simona Halep in a close final in 2018 and reached the quarterfinal in 2019 before going down to Johanna Konta in straight sets.
Last year was only the second time she did not reach the third round in Paris, falling to Paula Badosa in the second round.
Muchova v Stephens Prediction and Tip
Although Muchova is higher ranked and also the seeded player here, Stephens’ past experience will give her a slight edge. Also the American is back in form and will be looking to make the fourth round for the seventh time at Roland Garros.
