Ons Jabeur v Cori Gauff Head to Head

It’s three matches played and 2-1 in favour of Gauff. Their first meeting came at Lexington Open last season where Gauff won in three sets before making it 2-0 in Rome the same year.

It’s only this year that Jabeur managed to reduce the deficit by defeating Gauff at Charleston in the quarterfinal.

Jabeur Shrugs off Linette Start

Having reached the fourth round at Roland-Garros last season, Jabeur was the favourite in her match against Magda Linette to emulate that yet again this year too.

When she lost the early advantage and four games in a row to go a set behind though, it looked like Jabeur’s days in the tournament were numbered. Jabeur, who had earlier sent Yulia Putintseva and Astra Sharma out in straight sets, wasn’t done.

In fact not by a stretch.

The Tunisian player rattled off five breaks of serves, faced just one break-point in return and cruised in those last two sets to a 3-6, 6-0, 6-1 victory in an hour and 29 minutes.

This performance comes on the back of a solid season for Jabeur who has already reached the final at the Charleston Open and semifinal in the other tournament at the same venue. Wins over Martina Trevisan and Cori Gauff meant her form coming into French Open has been second to none.

Can she now get past her talented American opponent?

Gauff Comes Through after Brady Injury

Gauff is already looking at a breakthrough Grand Slam with a solid performance in her third round appearance here at French Open, making it her best ever showing at Roland-Garros.

The American, who had earlier made it to fourth round at both, Australian Open and Wimbledon, now has a chance to carve out her first ever Grand Slam quarterfinal and given how she has gone in the entire tournament, it wouldn’t be much of a shock if she did.

Because after sending out Aliaksandra Krunic and Wang Qiang, Gauff registered her 15th win on clay for the season against Jennifer Brady. While the match ended with Brady injured herself, Gauff was in full control even before then.

The 17-year-old needed a mere 23 minutes to win the first set thanks to a mere one unforced error. And while Brady tried to continue by calling a trainer to the court, she was left with no option but to retire from their match after being down 1-6.

What Gauff now needs is another such sterling showing and she could well be looking at her first ever Grand Slam quarterfinal here.
