Rybakina Shocks Williams

Elena Rybakina extended Serena Williams’ quest for a 24th major title by another Grand Slam as the 21-year-old Kazakh stunned the 39-year-old veteran in the fourth round of the French Open on Sunday.

In what was one of the biggest wins of her career, Rybakina needed just an hour and 17 minutes to dispatch the seventh seed 6-3, 7-5.

The Kazakh has been in scintillating form in Paris, reaching her first major quarterfinal without dropping a set in the first four rounds.

Starting the tournament with a 6-4, 6-1 win over France’s Elsa Jacquemot, Rybakina defeated Japan’s Nao Hibino 6-3, 6-1 in the second round and Russia’s Elena Vesnina 6-1, 6-4 in the third before causing the upset against Williams on Sunday.

Rybakina had 21 winners and 13 unforced errors in the match, while the three-time French Open champion had just 15 winners and 19 unforced errors. When it comes to break point conversion, Rybakina converted five of seven to Williams’ three of five.

The Kazkh, who reached five WTA finals in 2020, winning the title in Hobart, didn’t enjoy a lot of success in 2021, as she came to Paris with an 8-9 record.

A two-time winner on the tour, the World No. 22 began the year by reaching the quarterfinals in Abu Dhabi, but has been disappointing since then, making early exits from eight tournaments leading to the French Open.

Pavlyuchenkova Returns to RG Quarters After 10 Years

Ten years after reaching her only quarterfinal at Roland Garros, Russia’s Anasatasia Pavlyuchecnkova returned to the last eight with a stunning come-from-behind fourth-round victory over former World No. 1 Victoria Azarenka on Sunday.

The 31st seed, who took out the third seed Aryna Sabalenka in the third round, lost the first set despite taking a 1-3 lead, but came back strongly to win the two-hour-and-nine-minute contest 5-7, 6-3, 6-2.

Pavlyuchenkova broke her opponent eight times from 15 breaking opportunities in the match. She also saved six of 12 break points, having lost all three in the first set. The Russian also hit 45 winners and 27 unforced errors in the match against the Belarusian’s 31 winners and 30 unforced errors.

The win was Pavlyuchenkova’s second against 15th seed, having lost to her five times before. Her only win had come in Cincinnati in 2015 after Azarenka was forced to retire despite being a set up. So Sunday’s win was a massive achievement for the 29-year-old Russian, who moved to her seventh Grand Slam quarterfinal.

Ranked 32nd in the world, Pavlyuchenkova breezed past her first two opponents, defeating America’s Christina McHale 6-4, 6-0 in the opening round and Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic 6-2, 6-3 in the second.

The 12-time WTA winner then produced her A-game against the World No. 4, stopping her in the third round with a 6-4, 2-6, 6-0 win in an hour and 40 minutes. It was the first time since 2011  that the Russian had won a Round of 32 match at the French Open. She went on to reach the quarterfinals that year before bowing our to eventual finalist Francesca Schiavone.

Sunday’s win improved Pavlyuchenkova to 13-9 in 2021 and she will be aiming to reach her maiden Grand Slam semifinal with another win on Tuesday.

Rybakina v Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova Prediction and Tip

Both players are aiming for a first semifinal spot at a Grand Slam and both have scored huge upsets en route the quarterfinals.

Rybakina is the 21st seed; she has been flying by her opponents, and will take a lot of confidence from that shock win over Serena Williams. She will be a slight favourite but the vastly experienced Pavlyuchenkova will be desperate to put years of disappointment behind by winning a last eight match at a major for the first time. Expect the two to take this contest to the deciding set.
