Zverev Cruising After Opening Round Struggles

World No. 6 Alexander Zverev came to Paris confident at the back of two titles this year already, one at the Mexican Open but more relevant being his Masters 1000 win in Madrid defeating the likes of Rafael Nadal, Dominic Thiem and Matteo Berrettinni.

With what appeared to be a safe draw,  Zverev surprised all being down two sets to love against little known compatriot Oscar Otte on day one, but came back strong to win in five sets. It has been smooth sailing for him since having defeated Russian qualifier Roman Safiullin and then Serbian Laslo Dere in comfortable straight sets.

Up against Kei Nishikori in the round of 16, it was a clinical Zverev performance dropping only six games against a regular Grand Slam quarter-finalist at one point, for what was a convincing victory adding immensely to his moral.

With Dominic Thiem and Casper Ruud out of the tournament and Daniil Medvedev still not the most comfortable on clay, the German has a great chance at a deep run to the second weekend where he can likely expect to play one of the Big Three for a shot at the first major title of his career. The winner of the Medvedev- Tsitsipas quarter-final remains his biggest threat away rom the title round.

Fokina Resilience Sees Him In Final Eight

The promising 21-year-old Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina who reached the fourth round of the U.S. Open last year, did one better here this year defeating Argentine veteran Federico Delbonis in four sets to make his first ever Grand slam quarter final appearance.

It had been a good run to the French Open for the Spaniard, making the semi-finals at Estoril, the quarter-finals at Monte Carlo and the round of 16 in Rome.

In the first round here, Davidovich Fokina had needed just an hour and 57 minutes to beat Mikhail Kukushkin 6-4, 6-4, 6-3.

But since then it was two long five setters in rounds two and three. The Spaniard had needed three hours and 42 minutes to win his second-round match against Botic van de Zandschulp after being up two sets to love.

And then needed more than four hours against French Open dark horse Casper Ruud to come back from 0-6 in the fourth set to win the decider 7-5.

Zverev v Fokina Prediction and Tip

Fokina has displayed grit and resilience that has seen him make the final eight here at Roland Garros, with the result against Casper Ruud being one that stands out.

However, Zverev has been in strong touch through the clay season winning Madrid and in excellent form for the last three rounds now.

Expect the German to prevail in three hard-fought sets.
