Stojanovic Eliminates Vekic

World No. 87 Nina Stojanovic of Serbia caused an upset at the Nottingham Open on Thursday, eliminating the 2017 champion and the 2019 runner-up Donna Vekic in the Round of 16.

The 15th seed Stojanovic needed just an hour and 30 minutes to beat the third seed 6-3, 6-4.

Not broken even once in the match, the Serb saved both the break points that she faced, while capitalising on two of the three breaking opportunities against the Croatian, who underwent a knee surgery earlier this year.

Stojanovic, who had 10 aces in her second round win against France’s Oceane Dodin, served eight against the World No. 36 on Thursday. She also won 75.6% first serve points and 57.6% on the second serve.

On Tuesday, Stojanovic had needed two hours and 10 minutes to beat Dodin 7-6 (7-4), 7-5 in the Round of 32.

Stojanovic, who received a first-round bye, improved to 13-11 in all matches in 2021.

Her best showing this year came at the Miami Open, where she qualified for the main draw by defeating Linda Fruhvirtova and Bethanie Mattek-Sands and then ousted Heather Watson and Yulia Putintseva in the first two rounds for her first wins at a WTA 1000 event. She had to withdraw from the tournament before her third round match against Naomi Osaka.

Martincova Edges Past Garcia Perez

Facing Stojanovic in the quarterfinal will be Czech Republic’s Tereza Martincova, who edged past Spain’s Georgina Garcia Perez in the Round of 16 on Thursday.

The 17th seed had 12 break point opportunities in the match, and she converted five of those chances. Garcia Perez broke Martincova’s serve on five occasions as well, but couldn’t create a single break point opportunity in either the first or the second sets as she went down 1-6, 6-3, 2-6 in an hour and 38 minutes.

After receiving a bye in the first round, Martincova had needed just 63 minutes to beat America’s Caroline Dolehide 6-2, 6-3 in the Round of 32 on Tuesday.

A four-time champion on the ITF Circuit, Martincova withstood nine aces from Garcia Perez on Thursday. She was however on the money with her serves, landing 76% first serves and winning 72.5% of those. She also won 62.5% points on the second serve.

The Czech, ranked 94th in the world, has had a good year so far, registering her first win at a Grand Slam by reaching the second round of the French Open. She also made it to the third round of a WTA 1000 tournament for the first time, when she beat Kristyna Pliskova and Kiki Bertens en route the Round of 16 in Dubai. The 26-year-old right-hander, who come through the qualifying rounds, fell to Cori Gauff in the Round of 16.

Stojanovic v Martincova Prediction and Tip
