Federer Season Begins

10- time Halle champion and defending champion from 2019 Roger Federer returns for what he calls ‘ the start of his season’. Returning sparingly to the tour after two knee injuries and rehabilitation that saw him out for most of the 2020 season, Federer has stressed on grass and the season after being the primary focus for him on what many have alluded to as the ‘Last Comeback’.

Federer returned in March to the hard courts of Doha where he played two matches, defeating Dan Evans and then losing to Nikoloz Basilashvili in the quarter-finals before taking another break from the tour. The Swiss mentioned that he was pleased with the short return and needed to return to the practice courts before returning on the clay.

Despite an opening round loss at Geneva to Pablo Andujar, Federer had a good run on the clay at the French Open, winning three matches against very varied opponents in Denis Istomin, Marin Cilic and Dominik Koepfer. Federer was pushed in the last two matches to four sets and showed immense resilience and resolve in the match against the German Koepfer to prevail in a tight four setter.

The Swiss maestro pulled out ahead of the fourth round match against Matteo Berrettini citing the need to rest his body ahead of the grass season with no break between the French Open and  Halle, given the scheduling.

Federer returns to his Happy Hunting Ground where he has had many successes that have set him up well for the big one after, i.e. Wimbledon and will hope for a good week here. The draw remains stacked with the likes of Daniil Medvedev, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Alexander Zverev and Andrey Rublev among others.

Ivashka Qualifies for Halle after Stuttgart Main Draw

While the 27-year-old Ivashka has never seen better than world number 80 on the ATP charts and might be expected not to put up too much of a fight, he does come into this encounter with bit of an advantage.

And that’s the fact he has already played five matches on grass over the last one week.

Four of them have come in the qualifiers in Stuttgart and then here in Halle, while the one other encounter came in the main draw last week.

Interestingly, he had lost the second qualifying round encounter to James Duckworth in Stuttgart but still made the tournament main as a lucky loser. Unfortunately for him, Peter Gojowczyk managed to turn a one set deficit to carve out a three-set win over Ivashka.

Even more interestingly, Ivashka looked to have learnt from that loss to Duckworth and managed to defeat him in the second round of the qualifiers this time around.

Federer will be a bridge too far.

Federer v Ivashka Prediction and Tip

Had this been Federer’s first match on return, we might have had second thoughts about this but given he looked as well as he did at Roland-Garros, he should not  have too many difficulties getting past Ivashka in straight sets.

Tip: Federer to win in straight sets: 3/5 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
