Bencic Wins Dried Up Since Adelaide
After having made a decent start to the season which saw Bencic finish as a runnerup at the Adelaide International, results haven’t quite gone the way she would have liked.
The world number 11 has won just seven of her next 15 matches which includes only one occasion in which she registered two successive wins in a tournament.
In fact in that tournament in Madrid, there were signs of the old Bencic as she marched into the quarterfinal with three victories in a row but followed that up with three defeats from four matches.
If Bencic has long memory, she wouldn’t be too upset switching over to grass though.
The last full season of grass for Bencic, which came in 2019, had seen her made the final at the Mallorca Open and third round at Wimbledon. She now has a chance to kick-start this year’s grass swing with a win facing a qualifier but a lot will depend on how quickly she can adjust to the surface.

Qualifier Niemeier Likes Clay
She has won three ITF-level tournaments and all of those competition wins have come on clay for Niemeier. Not too surprisingly then, Niemeier’s best performance on the WTA circuit has also come on red dirt and it did recently in Strasbourg where she reached the semifinal as a qualifier.
Also not surprisingly, Niemeier, who was ranked outside the top 300 last season is now at her career-best ranking of 170th in the world.
Interestingly for a player who had never played on grass before this at any level, the 21-year-old looked quite comfortable on it during the qualifiers. She overcame Americans Ann Li and Claire Liu in straight sets to advance to the main draw of this event for the first time.
While Bencic belongs to a different pedigree of players from the aforementioned, the fact that Niemeier is in the form of her life and has played a couple of matches on grass already as compared to the Swiss player who is going to start out for this season, things could get feisty.
Bencic v Niemeier Prediction and Tip
Bencic is 8/13 to win this but those odds represent how bookmakers think she is not quite an overwhelming favourite against a player ranked 160 places behind her. Those are also tempting odds to go with and we will be doing that, albeit a scratchy win can be expected.
Tip: Bencic to win: 8/13 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
