In-Form Muchova Switches to Grass

For most players this switch from clay to grass might be a difficult one to make but if Muchova looks back at her performance on the latter, it might not cause her too much trouble.

Because while like everyone else, Muchova hasn’t played a single match on grass since 2019, her performance in that season was exemplary. Before she made it to the semifinal of the Australian Open this year, the Czech’s best performance at a Grand Slam had come at Wimbledon in 2019.

She was a quarterfinalist at the All England Club that season, making it to that stage on debut before losing to Elina Svitolina. Her scalps then had included Anett Kontaveit and Karolina Pliskova.

This season, Muchova had already reached the quarterfinal at Madrid and third round at French Open and if her form and previous performances on grass have anything to go by, she holds the aces in this one.

Kudermetova in Top Form

While her opponent will start off as a favourite in this one, Kudermetova is no pushover. Especially not given her record on grass and then again because of the manner in which she has gone about her business this year.

With two finals, one title and a 25-12 win-loss record this season, Kudermetova is 12th on the charts to make it to the WTA Finals with a distinct chance of entering the WTA Elite Trophy competition at the moment.

Wins over Elina Svitolina, Sloane Stephens, Paula Badosa, Kiki Bertens, Elise Mertens and Amanda Anisimova have been a part of her 2021 campaign already. Add the fact Kudermetova had made it to the semifinal at WTA Hertogenbosch in 2019 and quarterfinal as a qualifier in that very competition in 2018, one can be safe in the assumption she shouldn’t have a lot of problems on grass.

The problem would be her opponent, who comes in with a slightly higher pedigree on this and other surfaces.
