It’s Been an Up-and-Down Year for Martic
It’s been an up-and-down year for Croatia’s Petra Martic, who heads to her first event on grass with an overall record of 10-11 this year.
The 30-year-old Croatian, who has won one title (in Istanbul in 2019) from four WTA finals in her career, had a quiet start to the 2021 season. She won one and lost one at the Yarra Valley Classic, then lost her opening round at the Australian Open to Olga Danilovic before making the quarterfinal at the Philip Island Trophy, which she lost to Daria Kasatkina.
Her inconsistent run continued as she lost to Cori Gauff in the Round of 16 at Adelaide and then lost four more in a row before finally striking form in Rome, where she beat Shelby Rogers, Kristina Mladenovic, Nadia Podoroska and Jessica Pegula to reach her first-ever semifinal at a WTA 1000 event. Her run eventually ended with a defeat to Karolina Pliskova.
The Croatian followed her Italian Open exploits with a run to the last eight in Parma, but couldn’t continue that form at Roland Garros as she lost in the first round to Camila Giorgi.
Martic has a 14-9 overall record on grass and she has reached the fourth round of Wimbledon twice, in 2017 and 2019. She also played in the semifinals in Birmingham in 2019, finishing the season with a 6-2 record on grass. She will be hoping to pick from where she left in 2019.

Muhammad Wins Close Qualifying Matches
On Tuesday, Martic will open her Berlin campaign against American Asia Muhammad.
Ranked 199th in the world, the 30-year-old Muhammad enters the main draw after winning two tight qualifiers over the weekend.
The American defeated Kaja Juvan 6-3, 5-7, 7-5 on Saturday and then edged past Stefanie Voegele 7-5, 5-7, 6-3 in the second qualifying round on Sunday. Both the players are ranked much higher than Muhammad in singles and she will be taking a lot of confidence from those wins.
A prominent doubles player, Muhammad is 6 for 6 in doubles finals at the WTA level. She has 10 singles and 33 doubles titles at the ITF level.
In 2021, Muhammad is 5-6 from all competitions, across levels. She is yet to win a main draw match at the WTA level this year, having lost her only match to Storm Sanders at the Volvo Car Open in Charleston.
Petra Martic v Asia Muhammad Prediction and Tip
This should be a straightforward win for the Croatian. Muhammad would have gained a lot from the two tough wins in the qualifiers, but she will have her task cut out against the World No. 25.
