Matteo Berrettini v Andy Murray Head to Head

Their only previous outing came on the hard courts of the 2019 China Open which saw Murray come out on top in two tie-breakers.

Berrettini Coming off Difficult Opener

It was supposed to be an easy victory for Berrettini is his opening round match against Stefano Travaglia, with the world number nine going into the encounter at 1/5 odds to win it. Instead it took him two tie-breakers and nearly two hours to come through in his opener.

In a match where there were 13 break-points, both players earned himself one break of serve in each of the two sets and then went neck in neck during the tie-breakers which followed.

Berrettini struggled to get away in the opening tie-breaker, but serving at 5-6, his opponent lost his serve to help him pouch the opening set. He had a match-point in the 12th of the second set before clinching it off his third match-point which came in his tie-breaker.

It is Berrettini’s performance on grass which should make him a player to watch here, the Italian having won the Stuttgart Open that year, reached the semifinal at Halle and made it as far as fourth round in Wimbledon.

Can he stop Murray in his tracks?

Murray Wins His First Match in Ages

Injuries have become such a part of Murray’s career and he had entered this tournament with just one main draw win on the ATP circuit this year.

Murray did reach the final of the Biella Challenger – losing to Ilya Marchenko incidentally – but since then had won just one main draw match before this tournament.

On his favourite grass surface, it was the first time he had taken to court since his second round loss at the 2017 Eastbourne Open and he had no difficulties getting past Benoit Paire.

While Paire himself has been in a woeful touch, Murray will be damn pleased to have come through in straight sets in a match he played in some time. He won 6-3, 6-2 to register his first victory in three months.

Can Murray continue his run against a seeded player?
