Kei Nishikori v Sebastian Korda Head to Head

Nishikori and Korda have never played each other before this.

Nishikori Needs Three against Berankis

Switching from clay to grass and playing a match on this surface for the first time since making it to the quarterfinal at the 2019 Wimbledon, Nishikori was understandably rusty.

However, the Japanese player still found a way to get past his opening opponent Ricardas Berankis in three sets and after being on court for an hour and 42 minutes.

Life seemed easy for Nishikori who broke his Lithuanian opponent in the fifth and ninth game to wrap up the opening set. Berankis retaliated with vengeance as he forced Nishikori to drop serve in successive games and pick up the equaliser.

And when things went on serve for the first five games in the decider, it looked like things could get interesting. But Nishikori then broke to take a 4-2 lead and then again when Berankis was serving to stay in the match.

There has been slow, but steady return to form from Nishikori, who has spent a lot of time on the sidelines due to injury. He will, however, need to up the ante here against a Gen Next player in the form of Korda.

Korda Improves to 17-10 for the Season

A finalist at Delray Beach Open, a quarterfinalist at Miami Masters and a title winner in Parma, Korda made another seamless transition across surfaces when he sent Roberto Bautista-Agut packing in the opening round here in Halle.

The 52nd-ranked Korda registered a 6-3, 7-6 (0) win over his Spanish opponent in a match lasting an hour and 38 minutes, with the American sealing off a second top-10 victory of his career.

Korda did drop his serve twice in the match, once apiece in each of the two sets, but both those came after he had already broken his opponent once. In the first set, he retaliated with a second break of serve to pocket the set while in the second, it was pushed into a tie-breaker.

The tie-breaker turned out to be a one-sided affair in the end, with Korda demolishing his much-pedigreed opponent 7-0 and sealing his second round berth.

Expect him to have the upper hand against Nishikori as well.

Nishikori v Korda Prediction and Tip

Korda holds the edge here but let’s not forget Nishikori himself has shown form in recent times and we could see bit of a thriller here. Three sets in the offing.
