Having begun the season on a losing note, Keys looks to have finally found her rhythm with back to back performances that have seen her win successive matches.
Keys, after getting to the third round at French Open, has won two rounds in Berlin here but more importantly gotten past Aryna Sabalenka, the world number four.
In a match lasting two hours, Keys came back from a shoddy showing in the second set and a break down in the third to claim the shock win.
After racing off to a 4-0 lead in the first and finally clinching it 6-4, Keys’ rhythm fell away as Sabalenka took advantage of the momentum she took from a late break in the first.
And when she took a 2-0 lead in the third, it looked like Keys would wither away. That was not to be the case as the American broke back in the fourth game, missed out another chance to break in the sixth before clinching the match with one more as Sabalenka served to stay in the match at 5-6.
This will be some confidence to take with her into the rest of the grass court competitions for the year.

Samsonova Causing Upsets Galore
The only match in which Samsonova was truly a favourite in this tournament was when she took on Germany’s Noma Noha Akugue in her first qualifying round. She won that in straight sets as was expected out of her.
Samsonova followed that up with a difficult victory against Ana Konjuh to make the main draw and since then has taken the scalps of Marketa Vondrousova and Veronika Kudermetova in the first two rounds.
While Vondrousova hasn’t quite been a grass-courter, Kudermetova has had her moments on the surface but more importantly had come into this tournament with some form under her belt. For Samsonova to rout her 6-4, 6-3 was one of the surprises of the tournaments.
The question now is if Samsonova can make it three in a row. Because while Keys will start a favourite, it’s not as if the American has done brilliantly all season or has relished grass.
A rare semifinal appearance awaits Samsonova as a result.

Whatever the odds say, Samsonova’s confidence allows her to start off on an even keel with her opponent here. Expect a hard-fought match that goes into a third set with either player able to clinch it.
